A moment of reflection; the illumination from the lights represents clarity and self-awareness. This portrait reveals a side of me when everything becomes clear. Details are seen in the light that would have otherwise been lost in the darkness.
This piece is deeply personal to me, and I hope it resonates with those who view it.

The Ruffle
The disheveled ruffle was left out of place to embrace an unfiltered presence, as it is an acceptance and appreciation of imperfection. While Giselle wears a beautiful gown, the ruffle sits out of place; accepting and including this detail is Giselle’s controlled rejection of a flawless presentation. It reflects her transition at 17; still finding herself and her identity. Her strong, unwavering gaze reinforces a positive admission of imperfection and self-acceptance. It’s an admission of imperfection while quietly resisting to have to appear perfect. That ruffle is an honest detail which is a sign of life, vulnerability, and another nod to revealing and accepting truth.
The Garden
Giselle chose the garden setting to help shape the subject’s identity as it acts as a place of growth and transition -highly reflective of her transitional stage of her life at 17 years old.
The Illumination
The use of light is central to the meaning within the portrait as it symbolizes clarity & truth. The illuminated elements embody her emotional insight, self-awareness, and clarity. It represents her ability to see truth, as the light reveals detail and form which would have otherwise been lost in the darkness.
